applebooksQuality Education in Naperville School District 203

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE & INTEGRITY & VALUE

We were sent the following email which we thought made valid points and asked good questions, so we forwarded it to the candidates and asked them to respond. Here is the email and the candidates responses.

A district 203 resident asks:

"I have been to both your website and the taxpayersticket website. Not having a student at Central (2 at Benet) I really was unaware of the textbook controversy. I do believe, however, that three issues need to be addressed by your committee and I am very interested in how your candidates feel about the following issues. Your website contains info about why not to vote for the yellow ticket but no information about why we should vote for your candidates other than they will bring 'quality education."

Issue #1- 203 continues to have a huge windfall of money over the initial referendum- which I supported and went door to door in the rain for. There is a trust issue for me and none of your candidates have addressed it and or have ignored it.

Issue #2- Teacher's salaries/benefits are now very much in line and or surpassing what is normal in the business world today. (5% raises annually, wonderful health benefits and pensions). I credit society for finally valuing their position but hope that the teachers are realistic enough to know that you cannot always go to the well repeatedly. I say this knowing that I have a sign in my garage supporting the teachers during the strike in 1990 (1991?). If they really want better facilities then they had better be willing to compromise...better classrooms or a raise.

Issue #3- Does Central need renovation? Yes. Has the Board looked at any other alternatives (boundaries, enrollment predictions) to help with the solution/cost of renovating Central and adding on to Mill?  I know that in my area we are down to three, if not two kindergartens.
