Thank You for Supporting Your Schools.
QualityEducation203.org is delighted that the voters of Naperville Community Unit School District 203 voted for a mainstream positive vision for their schools.
They showed yesterday that school board elections are not about who has the most money and partisan politics. It is about performance and value for the dollars spent; it is about school board members who can talk about curriculum, facilities and students as well as the bottom line.
It was about candidates that can work cooperatively to solve the problems of the district and better the schools. It was not about block voting and taking over the board; it was about a clear commitment to public education. Candidates who did not understand that did not get the support of the voters of Naperville District 203.
Those of us who have first hand experience with 203 schools, have sent our children there, or have volunteered in the schools know the exceptional education that the district provides and did not accept the misleading, half-truth filled rhetoric of the anti-teacher, anti-school, anti-public education ticket.
It was not about voter turn out, it was about supporting the most valuable asset in our town. We all know the answer: "We came to Naperville for the schools."
The #1 answer to the question "Why did you move to Naperville?" is:
FOR THE SCHOOLS
We are concerned about three of the candidates--Jerry Buch, Dan Denys and Mike Davitt who are running as a block for the three open seats in the upcoming school board election on April 17th. They have openly stated that their intent is to form a voting block with Jim Caulfield, giving them a majority and taking over the board. This is a stealth campaign and the taxpayers and voters of District 203 are not getting the true story.
Buch and Denys have no prior involvement with the district. Mike Davitt, while being a board member, has nothing to show for his 4 years there other than the self appointed title of fiscal responsibility leader; he has served his term on the board promoting one agenda - budget cutting. Before that Mike has no record of any volunteer activity with district. How is it that people who claim to be so concerned about our schools can't find the time to become involved with our schools in a productive way?
Additionally, Mike Davitt only attended about 70% of this past year's meetings in person. Mike says attendance at the the meetings doesn't matter; that's a strange statement for someone whose votes affect our schools--a place where attendance is mandatory. He did not even show up to vote on the 2003 tax levy.
Buch, Davitt and Denys are a gang of three whose priority is all about money. Their education suggestions? Eliminate fees, expand foreign language instruction, and reduce class size (well, actually they only want to study the option--because they would have to spend money to do it), and rebate taxes. How do they intend to pay for this? They won't say.
These men think that teachers do not matter and they quote ultra-conservative think tanks that have no commitment to public education. The gang of three have an extreme attitude that is outside of the Naperville mainstream. They really don't want to improve our schools, they just want to pay a lot less taxes and will say whatever they have to in order to get elected.
Buch, Denys, Davitt have said that their intent is to take the teachers head on, force a strike and break their union; they want to make Naperville a test case for Illinois. District 203 is a high performing, top ranked school system that spends only slightly more than the state average per student. How will this strategy serve our community and the students in our schools?
This election is not just about money, it is about a high quality educational system and tax dollar value. Don't let the gang of three conduct their experiment on our schools.
Vote on April 17th.
At the heart of it all, members of a district's board of education must believe, unequivocally, in the value of public education. They must be dedicated to serving and teaching all children. They must believe in the democratic process and understand that their role is to act strategically, in line with the interests of the entire school community.1
